Call it a go to or a fall back gift. But sometimes coffee is seen as the “safe” gift. If you received the “safest”, “bestest” gift that someone could impart in your direction, let’s first, let’s hope they knew you loved Darrin’s Coffee and that the bag of coffee was Mandingo Warrior, Iron Roast or maybe even Darrin’s Mélange! But even if it wasn’t one of those bags of coffee (I know you’ll try one in near future!), here are a few key items to be aware of to ensure you’ll get the most from your present!
- Storage. Contrary to popular belief, don’t store coffee in the fridge or freezer. Some freezers and most refrigerators hold moisture. Coffee is considered a “dry good”, so without going into the science around it, we’re going to use the Caveman parlance of “Dry good. Wet bad.” Get it? Ha, sometimes I crack my own self up. So keep coffee good and dry. Store it in an airtight container in the cabinet. Don’t let a gift such as great coffee go to waste!
- Grinder. Get one. It will make all of the difference in the world. The only thing that is better than fresh roasted coffee is freshly ground coffee. Coffee needs to be ground with an even consistency. You are looking for a Burr Grinder. As a general rule of thumb, the longer the water will be in contact with the grounds there should be an increasing degree of coarseness. But of course (cracking myself up again) the grind should be what YOU think tastes the best! Though I can all but guarantee you’ll prefer freshly ground coffee. There is a reason why we grind all of our coffee in the shop before we brew, it tastes better!
- Mug. I’m going to assume that you probably already have a coffee pot. So I had to save the best for last! It’s your coffee. It needs to be about you. So get the coolest mug that means something to you, and when you take the time, to get away or to begin your day, something about that mug brings you to that “feel good” moment.
I try to keep it simple. I’m just sayin’.
